This isn't a course about technology. Nobody is going to ask you to understand how a language model is built, any more than you need to understand how a search engine ranks pages in order to use one.

It's about four things: what AI is good at, what it's bad at, how to ask it properly, and when to leave it alone.

What you need: ninety minutes, a device you can keep, and a topic you're teaching in the next two weeks. Have that topic in mind before you start.

Module 1 of 7 · about 10 minutes

Three things people believe about AI

Decide what you think before you read what we think. The explanation stays hidden until you choose.

AI knows everything.

Mostly false — and the reason matters more than the verdict.

AI doesn't hold facts the way you do. It predicts likely words from patterns it has seen. Sometimes those predictions are right. Sometimes they're confidently, fluently wrong, and it sounds exactly the same either way.

Think of a time you asked it something and got a very convincing answer. Now think about whether you ever checked.

Which means the skill you need isn't getting answers out of AI. It's judging the answers that come out. Your subject knowledge becomes more load-bearing, not less.

The second one is harder

Before you answer it — what are the most important things a good teacher does that are not delivering information?

Across the live sessions, teachers named:

  • Builds relationships
  • Motivates the ones who've stopped trying
  • Notices when something is wrong at home
  • Creates belonging
  • Knows which child needs pushing and which needs holding

Better AI means we'll need fewer teachers.

Look again at the list you just wrote.

Now the honest question: which of those can AI do?

None of them. Not partially, not badly — it has no access to the room.

The more AI absorbs the routine generation of content, the more of your value sits in the things it cannot touch. That's not a consolation prize. That's the actual job getting more visible.

Think of a teacher who changed something for you.

Was it because they had information you didn't have? Or because of how they saw you?

You have to become a tech expert before you can use AI properly.

Do you know how a search engine decides what to put first?

Almost nobody does. Almost everybody uses one competently, several times a day.

You don't need to become an AI expert. You need practical literacy: what it's good at, what it's bad at, how to ask better, and when to leave it alone.

That's the rest of this course.

AI is not a magic solution and not a threat that replaces you. It's a tool. Like every tool you've been handed, its value depends entirely on how thoughtfully you use it.

Whatever you wrote depends on your subject, your training, and the kind of school you work in.

Something was different that time. There wasn't one right answer, only several likely ones, and which one you reached for depended on your training and your context.

That's much closer to what AI is doing. On every single word.

What a language model is

ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot — different names, same thing underneath.

How a language model works Three stages: it reads enormous amounts of text, it finds patterns in which words follow which, then it predicts the most likely continuation one word at a time. 1 It reads Books, websites, articles, textbooks, transcripts. More text than any person could read in a lifetime. 2 It finds patterns Not facts. Patterns. Which words tend to follow which other words, in which kinds of writing. 3 It predicts One word at a time, it writes the most likely continuation of whatever you gave it.

Notice what's missing from those three steps. At no point does it check whether the answer is true. It checks whether the answer is likely.

Most of the time likely and true overlap. The gap between them is where you come in.

This is also why one tool can write a lesson plan, a rubric, a parent email and a summary of a chapter. Those aren't four different skills. They're all just generating language.

If the experiment runs long, drop the observation task and keep the reflection. The reflection is where the objective is assessed.

What changed between the third one and this one?

Three things teachers point at:

  • It's in a shape you can print and put on the desk
  • It differentiates — three levels, so the class of forty stops being one student
  • It tells you what to cut when you run out of time, which is what an experienced colleague would have said

The AI didn't get smarter.

TRCOC, and your first prompt

Everybody wants the trick. Here it is, and it's disappointing: tell it more.

TRCOC Task, Role, Context, Output, Constraints. Remembered as: This Ridiculous Computer Obviously Can't work without good instructions from you. T R C O C This Ridiculous Computer Obviously Can't Task Role Context Output Constraints …work without good instructions from you. That's the whole point.

Five things. Not all five every time, but the more of them you give it, the less generic what comes back is.

T Task — what should it do?

Create, summarise, generate, analyse, adapt, rewrite, translate, grade.

R Role — who should it be?

A Class 5 science teacher. A curriculum designer. A parent who speaks no English. An examiner.

C Context — what does it need to know about your setting?

Forty-two students. Mixed reading levels. No projector. We teach inquiry-first. Three children who need everything read aloud.

O Output — what shape should the answer be?

A table. A rubric. A worksheet. An email. Four slides. One page I can print.

C Constraints — what are the limits?

Thirty-five minutes. Only what's already in the room. No homework. Nothing that needs colour printing.

Context is the one everybody skips, and it's the one that turns a lesson plan into your lesson plan.

Refine, don't restart

Most people think the goal is writing the perfect prompt. Almost nobody actually works that way.

Watch what a fluent user does: they ask, they read, they say what's wrong, they ask again. Same conversation, four turns, and the fourth one is usable.

Check it before you use it

One thing left, and it's the one that matters most.

Everything you made in the last half hour was generated by something that predicts likely words. Likely is not the same as correct, and it never sounds any different.

Here's one that looks fine

If you taught this chapter, what would you check before putting this in front of thirty children?

Teachers who've taught this chapter flag:

  • Caste and inequality are handled in a sentence — the chapter does far more with them
  • "Diversity makes society richer" flattens a chapter that's partly about how it doesn't, for everyone
  • The outcomes sound right but aren't the ones the syllabus asks for
  • "Understand" and "appreciate" can't be assessed — you'd have to rewrite both
  • The examples are generic where the textbook uses specific ones your students have read

Nothing in that summary is a lie. It's plausible, fluent, and about seventy percent right, which is the most dangerous kind of wrong — it's too good to reject and not good enough to use.

Five questions, every time

  1. Is anything in here factually wrong?
  2. Is anything important missing?
  3. Does the language match the textbook my students actually hold?
  4. Would this work with the specific children in my room?
  5. Does it meet the outcome my syllabus asks for — or a nearby one that just sounds similar?

Even when it sounds certain — especially when it sounds certain — you are the last check before it reaches a child. That isn't a limitation of the tool. That's your job, and it's the part that doesn't get automated.

Never put a student's name or personal information into an AI tool

Not in a feedback prompt, not in a report comment, not "just this once to see what it says". No names, no marks tied to names, no diagnoses, no family circumstances, no school records.

Describe the situation instead of the child. "A Class 7 student who is reading two years below level" gets you exactly the same help as a name, and costs nothing.
